Over the next month, fire raged through the region impacting lives, communities, parks, and some of the most ancient and beloved remaining coast redwood forests in the world. A year later, we look back at the CZU Fire, the response and recovery that followed, and how we can best plan and prepare for what lies ahead. The fires in Big Basin grew to 40,000 acres overnight, engulfing California’s oldest state park and it’s beloved, ancient coast redwood trees.

Read on to look back at the CZU fire.

Sara Barth, Sempervirens Fund’s Executive Director, takes in the CZU fire damage to redwoods in Big Basin State Park’s Sempervirens Fund’s Legacy Grove.

We watched aghast as the fire spread through the park and beyond, threatening the homes and lives of people. As emergency crews worked tirelessly to save lives and homes, we were able to take immediate action by coordinating access to our properties, fire roads, water tanks, and fuel breaks to help slow the spread of fire to nearby communities. Shaded fuel breaks throughout San Vicente Redwoods, and coordination with the Bureau of Land Management and CalFire helped keep fire from Davenport and nearby communities in Bonny Doon.

Seeing redwood forests raging with fire was shocking. As news reports rolled in, we held on to hope that the naturally fire-resilient redwood forests and other fire-adapted plants might survive the catastrophic fire despite it burning hotter, higher, and longer than any in the region’s recorded history. The fire continued for more than 30 days before it was officially contained thanks to the valiant efforts of firefighters and response crews.

As the smoke cleared, we grieved, shared memories, assessed the damage, and looked ahead to what recovery means for Big Basin and Santa Cruz redwoods. More than 86,000 acres, including homes, Big Basin’s iconic buildings, countless trees, and 99% of the protected lands we manage burned in the CZU Lightning Complex Fire. It was heart wrenching to see the loss of life, homes, and the redwood forests of Big Basin. For more than a century we have protected Big Basin’s forests and expanded the park we have all come to cherish. The forest is expected to rebound, eventually, more or less-but when? How long until the forest looks, feels, sounds, and smells like the place I knew?

“As the tree grows, those black parts will get sloughed off,” said Zane Moore, a redwood ecologist who’s pursuing a PhD at UC Davis. In 20 years, he reckons the trunks will be about half red again. In 40 years, just a few scarred furrows will remain. “Anytime you’re in an old growth stand, you’ll see scars from past fires. They never necessarily get rid of all of it,” Moore says.

Read more about the time it takes nature to heal.

  Big Basin & Fire News

Wildfire Damages Much of Big Basin Redwoods State Park. We coordinated efforts to clear roadways of dangerous trees, replace important infrastructure, such as culverts, bridges, wildlife monitoring equipment, and gates, and began assessments of the ecological toll the fire might have on the region. Ongoing research will help us and our partners document the ethnobotanical and other effects of the fire on the region’s rich complex of habitats.

With little to no remaining vegetation to help keep the soil from washing away in the winter’s rains, removing debris and repairing infrastructure minimizes potential after effects of fire such as erosion and landslides. Fortunately there were no major rain events this past winter, but low precipitation in California is generating extreme drought conditions.

While many native plants thrive after wildfire, so do opportunistic invasive plants like French broom and yellow star thistle which take advantage of the burned, barren soil. Prior to the fires, and with the help of more than 400 volunteer and intern hours, 30 football fields worth of invasive plants were removed, which will help native fire-adapted species to regrow.

Throughout the winter fern fronds unfurled, redwood trees “fuzzed out” with new green sprouts, and the forests showed other hopeful signs of recovery. Botanical studies are being conducted on the properties to measure the health and recovery of the habitat as well as to search for rare plants like “fire followers,” that can sprout from dormant underground seeds awakened by the fire. In some areas, where the effects of the fire may prove to be too damaging-burning away even fire-adapted plants or leaving behind dangerous chemicals like arsenic-we are sampling soils, reseeding native plants, and planting coast redwood saplings to restore healthy habitat better prepared for climate change and the return of wildfire.

To learn more about rare and interesting plants like “fire followers”, watch Treasure Hunting in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

     Looking Back to Plan Ahead

We cannot predict how rapidly changing and increasingly extreme climate events will impact redwood forests, but we can look back at our resiliency efforts to plan ahead for an uncertain future. Earlier stewardship projects to manage our lands for and with fire helped to slow the spread of fire through our forests-protecting nearby communities.

In previous years we partnered with CalFire and the Amah Mutsun Land Trust to create a shaded fuel break on the edge of San Vicente Redwoods. A prescribed burn reduced dry brush and understory vegetation that can speed a fire along. These fire breaks-strategic gaps created in vegetation to act like speed bumps to fire-likely decreased the heat and speed of the fire at San Vicente Redwoods as it neared neighborhoods close by. This information will help us prepare the forests on our properties to withstand the next disaster, which we must expect and plan for. We are currently working to install new shaded fuel breaks on our properties throughout the region.

Multiple research and monitoring projects are generating new baseline data for understanding how the forests and habitats of the region respond and recover from fire. And by coordinating with regional partners, from California State Parks and the Bureau of Land Management, to Resource Conservation Districts and neighboring property owners, and through the Santa Cruz Stewardship Network, we are supporting each other’s efforts to both recover from one fire and prepare for the next.

To learn more about how our properties are managed for and with fire, watch Managing for Wildfire in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

     Preparing with Policy and Planning

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Sempervirens Fund (@sempervirensfund)

Land conservation, especially at the scale critical to safeguarding the Santa Cruz Mountains, relies on a complex array of funding sources and policies to encourage best conservation practices and outcomes. In 2020, key policies were created or reinforced to improve the outlook for conservation in the region. Just weeks before the lightning ignited the CZU fire, the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund became a permanent fixture for helping purchase natural lands and expand parks, protecting them forever. Protected and connected lands, like those in Butano State Park which was scorched in the CZU Fire, have been expanded with Land and Water Conservation funds. At nearly the same time, California Assembly Bill 3256, which would have provided much needed state funding to help prepare for climate change related disasters including wildfire, was not approved for California’s general election ballot for November. By January, embers reignited in the CZU Fire’s burn area, in what should have been the middle of our rainy season, and mountain communities were being evacuated again because of climate-induced wildfire. Fortunately, nearly a year later, Governor Gavin Newsom signed a robust budget package that includes significant funding for California State Parks and Big Basin, and investments in climate and forest resiliency, and wildfire and drought recovery.

On January 20th, in one of his first acts, President Joe Biden announced the United States would rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement and once again be part of an alliance of nations committed to fighting for solutions to the climate crisis. We hope this marks the beginning of renewed commitment at national, state, and local levels to address the urgency of the climate crisis and enhance the resilience of our natural and human communities.

For us at Sempervirens Fund, that means accelerating the pace and scale of the redwood forests we protect and restore because redwoods are climate change heroes. And although only 5% of these once vast redwood forests are still standing, with protection and stewardship, we’re growing the healthy, resilient, old-growth forests of tomorrow so future generations-of redwoods and people-can thrive.

  Big Basin & Recovery News

CZU Complex Fire: ‘Long, Long Process’ To Restore Big Basin Redwoods State Park

KPIX 5, 9/1/20

Watch

After Fire, a Charred Big Basin Looks To The Future – And New Life

KQED, 9/11/20

Watch

After Recent Fires, When Will Big Basin State Park Reopen?

Los Angeles Times, 11/11/20

Read

A Future With Fire

Despite the CZU fire’s containment on September 22nd, hot spots still smoulder today. Recovery work from last year’s fire continues and we are preparing forests for a future of more frequent fires by blending the latest science with the best practices of the past, so redwoods and wildlife can thrive. We believe Big Basin can be reimagined to honor its historic past and built to last for the future-planned for fire, coexisting with nature and people, and safe and welcoming for everyone. With your help, our forests can recover, Big Basin can be reimagined, and we can protect more resilient redwoods to grow our parks for people and wildlife to enjoy for generations to come.

Expand the topics below to read more about how we can best plan and prepare for what lies ahead.

     Sparking Stewardship

A prescribed burn reduces dry brush in the forest to help prevent catastrophic wildfire. by Ian Bornarth

While the CZU blaze was reported as officially contained on September 22nd, hot spots are still smoldering nearly a full year later. We tend to old-growth redwood trees on our properties, watering those that continue to smoke to this day, as weather reports warn of more potential dry lightning storms this summer like the one that ignited the CZU Lightning Complex Fire a year ago. Although the recovery work from last year’s fire continues, it’s clear we need to prepare our forests for a future with more frequent fires. Stewardship methods like prescribed burns, shaded fuel breaks, maintaining fire roads, and installing more water tanks are some of the ways we continue to prepare our natural lands for the inevitable return of fire-blending the latest science with the best practices of the past to improve forest management.

This work will make our forests more resilient and help wildlife like the marbled murrelet, coho salmon, and mountain lions thrive in a healthy forest home. Thanks to supporters, we are replacing melted wildlife monitoring cameras and acoustic recording units that help to detect the presence of key species like these and indicate a healthy habitat along with gates and other important equipment needed to care for our protected lands. And one unexpected and critical outcome from the CZU Fire is the opportunity to remove a century-old dam on Mill Creek, a tributary in the San Vicente watershed. This will greatly improve and enhance spawning habitat for Coho salmon and other fish species.

Learn more about endangered and threatened wildlife we protect habitat for in our Under the Redwoods webinars Pumas in the Santa Cruz Mountains and the Marvels and Mystery of the Marbled Murrelet.

     Reimagining Big Basin

Although the coast redwood forests of Big Basin Redwoods State Park have faced and survived major fires before since we first protected its lands with the help of supporters like you in 1900, there is still much work to be done to not only help its native plants thrive but to reenvision and rebuild the park itself. In addition to its historic buildings, infrastructure for electricity and water in the remote forest were destroyed as well. We were delighted in May 2021 when Governor Newsom announced ambitions for the 2022 state budget to include $200 million for wildfire damaged State Parks across California including $186 million for Big Basin State Park.
