The region&#8217;s 1,025 square miles, or 656,000 acres, of redwood forest and watersheds, equal 21 San Franciscos and is nearly as large as Yosemite National Park. It is a tremendous, natural complex, and it needs your help.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/secure.sempervirens.org\/onlineactions\/Fv3AoGt3fkaoxC6fUma1-Q2?ms=10ZW100_A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Donate Now <\/a> <a href=\"\/protect\/\" target=\"_self\"> Protecting Redwoods <\/a><\/p>\r\n<h2>What&#8217;s at stake?<\/h2>\r\n<p>About two-thirds of the region&#8217;s redwood forests are already protected. But, 610 square miles, or 390,000 acres, of priority forest land are still vulnerable to subdivisions and development. This endangers all the <a href=\"https:\/\/sempervirens.org\/learn\/protecting-wildlife\/\">animals<\/a> and people who depend on the forest. A vast <em>Sequoia sempervirens<\/em> forest thrived here for <a href=\"https:\/\/sempervirens.org\/learn\/redwood-facts\/#old-as-dinosaurs\">at least 20 million years<\/a>, and with your help we can protect what remains and support people and wildlife for generations to come.<\/p>\r\n<p>Of the 10,000 acres of <a href=\"https:\/\/sempervirens.org\/news\/old-growth-what-it-means-and-why-it-matters\/\">old-growth redwood forests<\/a> in the Santa Cruz mountains, less than 1,000 acres remain unprotected in small, fragmented patches across the region. It will provide a safe home for wildlife-like <a href=\"https:\/\/sempervirens.org\/learn\/protecting-wildlife\/#protecting-wildlife-pumas\" data-acsb-clickable=\"true\" data-acsb-navigable=\"true\" data-acsb-now-navigable=\"true\">mountain lions<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sempervirens.org\/learn\/protecting-wildlife\/#protecting-wildlife-marbled-murrelet\" data-acsb-clickable=\"true\" data-acsb-navigable=\"true\" data-acsb-now-navigable=\"true\">marbled murrelets<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/sempervirens.org\/learn\/protecting-wildlife\/#protecting-wildlife-coho\" data-acsb-clickable=\"true\" data-acsb-navigable=\"true\" data-acsb-now-navigable=\"true\">Coho salmon<\/a>-and crucial refuge and recreation for us all.<\/p>\r\n<p>And critically, thriving and connected redwoods are <a href=\"https:\/\/sempervirens.org\/learn\/redwoods-and-climate-change\/\" data-acsb-clickable=\"true\" data-acsb-navigable=\"true\" data-acsb-now-navigable=\"true\">climate champions<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sempervirens.org\/news\/redwoods-and-wildfires\/\" data-acsb-clickable=\"true\" data-acsb-navigable=\"true\" data-acsb-now-navigable=\"true\">resilient to fire<\/a>, and capturing and storing <a href=\"https:\/\/sempervirens.org\/learn\/redwood-facts\/#climate-change\" data-acsb-clickable=\"true\" data-acsb-navigable=\"true\" data-acsb-now-navigable=\"true\">more carbon dioxide<\/a>, more efficiently, and for a longer time, than any other tree species on the planet.<\/p>\r\n<p>Sempervirens Fund purchases or accepts donations of land for conservation by working cooperatively with willing landowners.
